Season of Creation
"From Whales to Worms & Everything in Between"
Happy Season of Creation! Ecumenical Patriarch Dimitrios I started the Season of Creation in 1989. It was endorsed by Pope Francis in 2015, and has since spread throughout many communities of faith. The Season begins on September 1, a day of prayer, and continues until October 4, the Feast of St. Francis.
This year, St. Peter’s is marking the Season of Creation with events that are open to everyone.
One Home One Future, September 24: The ecumenical creation care organization, Blessed Tomorrow, will be hosting a full day of online creation care programming celebrating the one-year anniversary of the One Home One Future campaign. Creation Care at St. Peter’s is going to be featured, including a brief video from our church when they highlight work in congregations. At the following link, you may register to view the entire event, or just the main event which begins at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, September 24. Register here to view the entire event, or just the main event which begins at 7:00 p.m.
St. Francis Weekend: In honor of this special weekend, we will participate in ecumenical events celebrating “Whales to Worms and Everything in Between.”
The Last of the Right Whales Screening: On Friday, October 4 at 7:00 p.m., there will be a screening of “The Last of the Right Whales” in Maxwell Hall at Memorial United Methodist Church (50 N. 6th Street.) Childcare will be available if requested by October 2. Barb Zoodsma, a retired coordinator for Right Whale Recovery from NOAA, is featured in the film. Barb is a local and will be present to answer questions.
Composting Workshop: On Saturday, October 5 at 10:00 a.m. in Burns Hall at St. Peter’s we will offer a free workshop on composting. The workshop will include a brief introduction to vermicomposting (worms) and an in-depth presentation on Bokashi. The workshop facilitator is Tiffany Bess, founder of Apple Rabbit Compost in Jacksonville. Please register for the workshop by October 2.
Ecumenical Blessing of the Animals: On Sunday, October 6 at 2:00 p.m. we will have a blessing on the lawn in front of St. Peter’s Wood Youth Center (corner of Alachua and 9th Street). Bring your favorite furry, hairy, scaly, and feathery friends, and a chair or blanket to sit on. We’ll gather for a brief ecumenical worship service, followed by personal pet blessings. We’ll have a decorated photo area to commemorate the occasion, and the Nassau Humane Society will be on hand with pets looking for forever homes. Please bring items to donate to the Humane Society.
